The problem

Important documents are filed wherever was convenient at the time. When a passport needs renewing or a policy number is required, the search starts from scratch — and renewal dates pass unnoticed.

The approach

LifeRoster is a vault with a folder tree, a proper scanner and structured metadata. A document is captured as clean, cropped pages, filed where it belongs, and carries the expiry date that lets the app warn you before it lapses.

  • Document scanner

    Camera capture with automatic page-edge detection, perspective correction and enhancement, so a photographed page comes out square and sharp.

  • Folder tree

    Top-level categories shown as a grid, containing subfolders and documents.

  • Multi-page documents

    Up to 30 pages per document, captured in sequence from camera, gallery or scanner.

  • Page manager

    Drag-reorder pages, enhance them all at once, and move pages between documents to merge or split them.

  • Expiry tracking

    Document type, number, expiry date and renewal status, with expiring documents surfaced ahead of time.

  • PDF export and share

    Export a document's pages as a PDF and share it.

  • Vault-wide search

    A dedicated search screen across the whole vault — over names, types, numbers and tags.

  • Link a document to what it is about

    Point a document at a vehicle or a meter and it appears on that record's screen too, so the insurance certificate is findable from the car as well as from the vault.

Scan or attach

Scanned pages are captured as clean, cropped images and kept with the document they belong to — so the vault stays a filing cabinet rather than becoming another camera roll.

Pictures on this record

Here the pictures are the document. A scan is captured at a higher resolution than an ordinary photo so fine print survives, and the pages stay in order as one record rather than becoming loose images.

What it is like to live with

The things that decide whether a module still helps after a year of real use.

On a phone

Capture is the whole point on a phone: a quick Scan action goes straight to the camera, detects the page edges, corrects the perspective and lets you keep shooting. Scans are captured at a higher resolution than ordinary photos so text stays sharp.

Your data

Documents stay private to your account and are protected on your device and while syncing. They are never used for advertising and are not shared with anyone.

Good to know

  • Up to 30 pages per document, and pages can be reordered or moved between documents to merge and split them.
  • Expiring documents surface ahead of their renewal date rather than after it.
  • Scanning uses your phone's own scanner, so it is an Android and iOS feature; in a browser you can still attach photos.
  • Text recognition is not available yet, so document contents are not searchable — names, types, numbers and tags are. It is on the roadmap.
